NOTAM HOTEL 4th October 2013

Toronto sector file is updated current version is now 2.3. Get it at https://www.ivao.ca/resources/sfiles

NOTAM GOLF 13th December 2012

A new edition of our ATC phraseology guides is now available in the "Resources > Documents And Guides" section, in both official languages.

As you know, effective radio communications between ATS and pilots is extremely important in real life to prevent incidents and accidents from happening. On IVAO, as our mission is to be as real as it gets, we strongly encourage all members to adopt the same attitude by using the approved phraseology. It is mandatory for all controllers in Canada to use the official phraseology guide in an effort to maintain a high standard in communications. Pilots are also strongly encouraged to use approved phraseology.

We believe that this change will continue to improve our division and our high standards.

ICAO FLIGHT PLANNING CHANGES

Effective November 15th, 2012

This message is to inform you about the ICAO worldwide changes applying to flight plans and effective today (November 15th). This is to address current and future status of aviation and air traffic management technology. Basically, the changes apply to field 10 (Equipment - mostly navigational) and field 18 (Remarks), as well as other minor changes. The nature and scope of the amendment is to update the ICAO model flight plan form in order to meet the needs of aircraft with advanced capabilities and the evolving requirements of automated air traffic management (ATM) systems, while taking into account compatibility with existing systems, human factors, training, cost and transition aspects.” (Ref.: AN 13/2.1-08/50 dated June 25, 2008)

We strongly suggest that you visit http://onboard-abord.ca/flight-plan-2012, as many documents and even a Quick Reference Card from NAV Canada are available.

Be advised that the new version of IvAc that has just been released is fully compatible with those new changes.

WTM CORRIDOR MAJOR PROCEDURES CHANGES

1. INTRODUCTION

Since July 1st 2012, new procedures are in effect in the Windsor – Toronto – Montreal corridor, following real world application on February 9th 2012. These changes were implemented in order to improve efficiency on this very busy region of Canada. It allows a safer and better traffic flow and expedites movements along the corridor. New Standard Instrument Departure procedures (SIDs), Standard Terminal Arrival Route (STARs), IFR preferred routes and RNAV airways are now applicable. All pilots and all controllers must adhere to the new procedures. Please keep reading to learn more about the latest changes.

2. NEW CHARTS

New charts have been uploaded on our website. The previous ones were dated from 2006, which refreshes the entire database. The major changes affect Toronto (CYYZ), Ottawa (CYOW), Montreal (CYUL) and Quebec (CYQB), as new Standard Instrument Departures (SID) and Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STAR) now exist. Use of the new charts by ATC is now mandatory, and strongly suggested for pilots except when aircraft is not RNAV equipped.

3. NEW RNAV ROUTES AND PREFERRED ROUTES

The IFR en route charts were updated to include the new RNAV routes and intersections. RNAV airways can be recognized as they begin either with Q or T (for example: T731). IFR preferred routes were also changed in a significant way. Pilots will have to file the appropriate preferred route for their flight, or they will have their route modified accordingly by ATC in their initial clearance. To learn more about the new preferred routes, it is possible to visit the preferred routes database available through our website (Resources section). Only routes arriving in CYUL are up to date. Therefore, many routes are still outdated, but we are working in close collaboration with the Flight Ops department in order to update them. In the meantime, it is acceptable for members to use old routes. Please note that the Flight Planning section of the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) online on our website has been modified to remove old preferred routes. The following diagram shows the new Q and T airways in the corridor. Eastbound traffic remains over or south of Campbellford VOR (YCF), whereas westbound traffic remains north of it.

4. NON RNAV AIRCRAFT

In real life, it was observed that 98% of the IFR traffic inside that corridor was RNAV equipped. On IVAO, however, the percentage could be lower. All aircraft that are capable of RNAV navigation will need to follow the new procedures and file an appropriate preferred route for their flight, while using the new charts. Other aircraft can use the two remaining classic airways (V98 eastbound and V300 westbound) or file a route using ground-based NAVAIDs (VORs for example), but might see their route changed in their initial clearance. Vectors can be provided on arrival for aircraft unable to follow the new RNAV STARs. Aircraft which FMS database is not up to date are suggested to file as Not-RNAV equipped and fly accordingly.

5. SECTOR FILES

The Montreal sector file has been updated on our website and contains the following changes: new STARs for CYUL, CYOW and CYQB, new intersections and new exit routes for CYMQ. The low level airways were also re-established after we realised they were not in the file anymore. The file is not completely done yet. The exit routes for CYOW and CYQB were deleted and need to be updated, the new types of RNAV airways will NOT appear on the sector file and some intersections that might not exist anymore have not been deleted yet. The Toronto sector file has also been updated on our website and contains the following changes for CYYZ: new STARs, new intersections, modified arrival corridors and new exit routes. The file is not completely done yet. The new types of RNAV airways will NOT appear on the sector file and some intersections that might not exist anymore have not been deleted yet.

6. PROCEDURES

The Montreal FIR and Toronto FIR local procedures have been updated on our website. Some data may be still outdated, but we are working hard to correct any mistakes.

7. LETTERS OF AGREEMENT

The Canadian division has one internal letter of agreement (LOA) between the Montreal FIR and the Toronto FIR, and two external LOAs with the US division of IVAO (between Toronto – Cleveland and Montreal – Boston). The internal letter was updated on our website and was approved by the division Director. The two external letters were sent to the United States division for approval and should be updated shortly.

8. QUESTIONS

You can stay informed about the progress of this project through the forums or website home page. Direct all questions to the CA-AOC.

NOTAM DELTA 1st January 2011

IVAO Canada has implemented the Guest Control Approval (GCA) program for all our ATC positions regulated by FRA (Facility Rating Assignment). GCA program was created by IVAO HQ to improve the ATC quality provided in all participating active divisions. It concerns foreign divisions’ controllers who are interested in controlling in Canada. From now on, any member of other divisions will not be allowed to control in Canada on FRA restricted positions unless they receive approval from the division HQ. Visit the GCA Program in the Controllers section of the website.
