Gander Flight Information Region

Procedures

The Gander FIR consists of the airspace above the atlantic province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It covers some rather inhospitable land, and large parts of the airspace are class G below FL180.

The NATs start/end in Gander airspace, which implies co-ordinating NAT clearances and identifying traffic arriving from Europe.

Yet another complication is the restricted areas around Goose Bay. Their activity is dependent on NOTAMs, and many have different levels of activity.

Gander Oceanic FIR covers a portion of the North Atlantic, and Greenland (above FL195). This airspace is very important as countless flights cross "the pond" on the NATs (North Atlantic tracks) daily. The Gander Oceanic FIR lies beside Shanwick, to the east, New York Oceanic to the south and Reykjavik to the North.

Service within the Gander FIR is provided in English only.

In the menu on the left you will find information and procedures for controlling or flying within the FIR. If you require further information please contact our division staff.

We hope you enjoy your visit to Atlantic Canada.
