The Halifax TCU provides terminal control for the Halifax TCA
The Halifax TCA covers Halifax Intl. (CYHZ), Halifax Shearwater (CYAW), and a few smaller uncontrolled airfields.
The TCA extends to FL230 and is class D transponder airspace below 12'500ft, and B, then A above that.
This document only covers Terminal procedures. For aerodrome procedures of airports within the TCA please visit their designated pages in the menu to the left.
Use the following SFI codes when appropriate.
Halifax Terminal Arrivals
| S | All aircraft landing on runway 05 | |
| I | All aircraft landing on runway 14 | |
| B | All aircraft landing on runway 23 | |
| D | All aircraft landing on runway 32 | |
| A | All aircraft landing in CYAW |
Halifax Terminal
Callsign: |
CYHZ_APP "Halifax Terminal " *
Frequency: |
119.20 | |
Description: |
The terminal sector is responsible for the Halifax TCA
Co-ordination: |
Moncton (SJ/CB/QM) | Clear all departures to FL230 or flight planned altitude, whichever is lower. Maximum altitude for flights to Moncton is FL180. |
*Note: |
Radio callsign for departing aircraft is "Departures", for arriving aircraft radio callsign is "Arrivals", and for transiting aircraft it's "Terminal"
VFR Advisory
Callsign: |
CYHZ_V_APP "Halifax Terminal" * |
Frequency: |
118.70 |
Description: |
The VFR advisory sector may only be opened with prior permission, for special events. This sector will talk to all VFR traffic in class D airspace, and ensure separation with IFR departures and arrivals. |
Co-ordination: |
Maintain constant contact with the IFR sector to determine where IFR flights will be vectored. |
Halifax International
Arrivals will be routed via the one of the RNAV STARs or direct YHZ VOR for vectors and will be cleared to 10'000 feet, or as requested. Moncton Centre will hand off aircraft to "Halifax Arrivals' on 119.20 prior to entering the TCA.
Avoid descending non-straight-in traffic below 6000ft until clear of the departures end of the runway to avoid potential conflicts with departing traffic, which will be climbing to 5000ft.
Shearwater
Arrivals to Shearwater will be vectored direct to the destination. Be careful not to vector traffic through the departure path of Halifax Intl arrivals. If PAR is in use at Shearwater transfer aircraft to the PAR controller as requested.
General
Be cautious when vectoring departing and arriving traffic to avoid conflicts created by altitude - or lack thereof. There are no pre-determined techniques at any airports, but the terminal controller is responsible for spacing along the airways.
Clear aircraft direct a waypoint further along the route whenever possible, after co-ordinating with Moncton ACC.
